Our Itinerary

Friday 17th February 2017:

“Geo-thermal energy and rifting”

07:45 Meet outside the Botanical Gardens

Coach to Birmingham then Icelandair flight to Keflavik, departing Birmingham 12:25

15:10 Arrive at Keflavik

Visit the new GeoPark Visitors Centre

On to the Hotel Ork and evening meal

Saturday 18th February:

“Golden Circle: Effects of rifting”

Visit the Soil Conservation Project visitor centre Sagnagardur at Gunnarsholt

Gullfoss – awesome fault-guided waterfall and walk beside its gorge

Geysir

Swim at the Fontana Spa

Þingvellir National Park - rifting between American & Eurasian plates

On to the Hotel Stykkishomur in the Snæfellsnes

Sunday 19th February:

“Wilderness: Eruptions, Sharks, Waterfalls, Glacier & Caving”

On to Stykkishólmur on the north coast of this wilderness.

Visit to the Volcanic museum for film and talk on Iceland’s volcanic eruptions.

On to the unique Shark Museum: the tradition of Vikings.

Drive round the north coast stopping for awesome waterfalls (including being able to walk behind one), dramatic volcanoes, stunning sea cliffs and pristine fjords.

Caving in one of the best lava tubes in Iceland with activity company

Visit the glacier snout: Snow shoe hike on Glacier

Coastal hike to view caves, arches, stacks and lava formations – an erosional coastline

On to the Hotel Stykkisholmur on the edge of Iceland

Monday 20th February:

“Reykjavik and Geothermal Activity”

Follow the volcanic ridge along the Snæfellsnes back to Reykjavik

Brief tour of Reykjavik including views over centre from the Perlan and Hallgrímskirkja

Into the Reykjanes GeoPark

Geothermal activity at Gunnuvher

Major rift where two continents are dividing (called the ‘Land Bridge’)

To the restaurant Vitinn for Icelandic meal

On to the Airport hotel

Tuesday 21st February: “Departure”

Walk across to the airport (takes 2-3 minutes)

08:00 Icelandair flight back to Manchester, departing Keflavik

10:35 Arrive at Manchester

Coach back to Sheffield, back at the Botanical Gardens at approx 13:30
